Diffenderfer was on the beach and Greg Noll took a wipeout. Someone yelled the classic Japanese warcry "Banzai!" At the same time they were doing roadwork on the nearby Ke Nui Road and there was a sign that said "PIPELINE." Diffenderfer put the two together and its stayed Banzai Pipeline.
